Gunkholing is a strange and little known term. It is used in the nautical world, that loosely describes the act of dipping in and out of small inlets, coves and rivers that are in shallow water. Most people think of Gunkholing as a style of cruising local shores. Boats from kayaks, shallow draft sail & power boats, and catamarans area ideal types of water craft to get into tiny, little known waters.
Gunkholes are places that are in confined coves or tight entrances. They are a challenge to navigate and need good boat handling skills to navigate safely. If you do not find Gunkholes by careful exploration you will need to find other like minded sailors that are willing to provide local knowledge of the area you are cruising.
The best Gunkholers are sailors who are wanderers by nature and want to discover and explore hidden or little know anchorages to satisfy their need for serenity.
We at Gunkholing.com are expanding that definition of Gunkholing to encompass interesting anchorages that are off the beaten path, where local knowledge is needed to enter and navigate safely.

Little information on the web is devoted to our definition of Gunkholing. Most information is in cruising guides and does not leverage the modern connected world to provide the best local knowledge of great out of the way anchorages.
